I'm normally not big into poetry, but I like how authentic this book is. I can almost imagine Sarah with her kids when I read this-- the wonderful, joyous times and also the annoyances, inconveniences, and general chaos. This is a peek inside parenting for me, and I was surprised how when I read one poem I kept wanting more, until I'd devoured the whole book in one sitting. A good book, highly recommended for parents and those who'd like to know what parenting is like.Product details

What It Is Is Beautiful Sarah Dunning Park 9781933339597 Books Reviews
I sat down and read this book of poems cover to cover and then immediately started over. Written for moms of small children, it was refreshing in its honesty and beautiful language. Often poetry can feel intimidating and condescending to those without a degree in it or who aren't used to reading it, but this book is accessible for anyone to read. I would recommend this especially for mothers, but also for anyone wanting to read a dang good little book of poems.
I applaud Sarah Dunning Park for her beautiful honesty about motherhood. She speaks for all mothers who are just trying to survive the day and get through their everyday ordinary mundane tasks. Sarah shares their lament as she wonders how she will get through the day and keep her sanity. Yet, she takes the ordinary, does not attempt to sugarcoat motherhood...and leaves us feeling lighter. It's as if she tells all of our shared stories. Through the telling of her own personal journey, Sarah has the ability to connect with the reader and leave them feeling supported and understood as a Mom.
Sarah has offered a gift to all mothers, through her ability to speak the truth about the trials of motherhood, and find the beauty in being a Mom.
As a child & adolescent therapist and parent coach, mother and grandmother, I have and will continue to recommend Sarah's book to Moms!
Oh, how I love this book! It arrived in the mail during my girls' afternoon rest time, so I stole a moment to sit down on the couch and read a poem or two. I ended up there for the next hour, devouring the whole book of poetry while alternately laughing and crying, and my to-do list for the afternoon was left completely undone. It was the best hour I'd experienced in a long time. Sarah's poetry is wonderful. She gets right to the heart of motherhood, and really, parenting in general (my husband also loved her poems!). She manages to be succinct and yet incredibly rich all at the same time. Her poetry is not the kind of poetry that is hard to understand or tries to be too smart for its own good - instead, it's full of relatable language and common experiences to which every parent reading will be able to nod in agreement, or chuckle, or weep with gratitude that someone else has been through what you're going through. Give yourself a gift and get this book - and then buy one for all of your friends that are parents, too.
Finally, poetry that brings humble sense to the chaos of contemporary motherhood. I am a mom of young kids, and there are times when I have wanted to hug this book. Park gives voice to near-universal but under-recorded struggles, insecurities and - yes - joys of mothering. Her work is beautiful, honest, humble, and REAL. It's easy to feel isolated by the minutiae of the everyday, which are yours and yours only if you are a primary caretaker of young children. These poems remind me that when everything feels like it's falling apart despite my every effort to just Keep It Together, I'm not alone. They make me laugh - I'm thinking here of the Ode to the Minivan, where Park describes the family vehicle in a way that makes me feel not-so-bad about our own clunker. They also spark a recognition of loveliness in the everyday - a reminder that this IS important work. Park stitches moments and images together to bring out the thread of meaning in all of it. The best part is, the medium of poetry distills complex themes to a length that can be read in the time it takes to go number one. Then you can mull over the poem for the next few busy hours. Highly recommended for mothers everywhere. I was given this as a gift, and was struck by how appropriate it felt for me in my stage of life. I think I received it more gratefully than either the giver or I could have known beforehand! If you're a busy mom or you know a busy mom, this is definitely for you (or them).
Great & encouraging compilation of poems for mom. Reminds us we are not the only one struggling.
The experience of mothering (parenting, really) is filled with turbulent emotions, and Sarah Park's book allows us to express/reflect/ponder/meditate/laugh/cry/smile as she tells us what we have already felt. A quiet book about loud emotions, and one that i've been reading at bedtime to help me be a better mom the next day. It's a joy to read. I will be giving it as gifts until all my friends have a copy.
I am not a mother, but I love this slim volume of poetry (and have found it be quite the hit at baby showers!). I can't help but think of three other writers when I read these poems and I mean that as highest praise. Like Anne Lamott, Park's words are refreshingly honest---they catch you off guard at times. And like both Mary Oliver and Annie Dillard, Park demonstrates keen attention to detail without unnecessarily lavishing her poems with flowery words. In a spare style, Park's poems bring to life the day-to-day of motherhood; and what it is, is beautiful.
A good book, highly recommended for parents and those who'd like to know what parenting is like.
